Summer vacation with children is just around the corner, and days at the beach should be an enjoyable experience for the whole family. Here are some important tips to keep in mind to ensure a relaxing stay:
Sun:
The sunlight at the beach, especially during midday, is extremely intense. Both in the water and in the air, the rays reflect, which can cause sunburn even in the shade. Children should wear sunscreen with a high SPF of at least 50+ even under the umbrella. Sunscreen should be generously applied to dry skin, ideally at home and at least half an hour before sun exposure. Waterproof and rub-resistant sunscreens are essential, especially when playing in the sand. During extended periods outdoors, sunscreen application should be repeated regularly. Hats and lightweight clothing are also recommended while playing in the sun to prevent sunburn and heatstroke.
Sand:
It is advised that children wear waterproof shoes to avoid injuries from stones, glass shards, and the hot sand.
Water:
Children should never play near water unsupervised, even in shallow areas. Non-swimmers should wear floaties. Children can become hypothermic despite warm temperatures. Playing in the water can wash away the protective earwax layer, leading to painful ear infections.
Marine Animals:
Caution is advised around rocky coasts as sea urchins may be present. In case of a sting, the spines should be removed with tweezers and the area soaked in vinegar. If children encounter jellyfish, they should avoid the water. In case of contact, residues can be carefully removed with the back of a knife, and a small antihistamine or cortisone ointment can be applied to minor injuries.
